O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She appeared as a model in commercials for a while before moving out into Los Angeles. Career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well performing commercials in a variety of ways. She made her debut on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in several shows. She appeared in both independent and made for TV movies. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady, who played the big-haired secretary between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. In 1995, O'Grady won Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series together with the ensemble.
