O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. But she lost badly in the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were surprised at her performance and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the top three. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
